Attributes of God – Part 9: God’s Oneness
hen we try to understand God’s ways, it requires spiritual discernment, a gift from the Almighty himself. We need spiritual gifts of wisdom and understanding granted to us because God is Spirit (John 4:24) which we already discussed in Part 1 of this series. God does not have a helper; He is Almighty, all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, transcends time and space all on his own.
Before we go any further, we have to emphasize that God reveals who He is to us on His own will. We have several Christian denominations that completely disagree on this topic alone because they have tried to figure God out themselves. As such, we now have several interpretations, perspectives, theories and confusion among denominations about God. Yet we know the God's Word is Truth (John 17:17; Psalms 119:128; 33:4).
In fact, the way to stay on course is to stick to the Bible:
- You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you (Deuteronomy 4:2).
As such,
“This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words”(1 Corinthians 2:13).
God is one not a Trinity or Dual
We categorically reject the mainstream Christian doctrine of the Trinity (a belief that God exists as three divine distinct persons).
- First, the word Trinity is not in the Bible.
- Second, God is spirit (John 4:24) God is NOT a Trinity (Three distinct godheads or tritheism) and neither Dual (two gods or duotheism) in nature but ONE (Deuteronomy 6:4, Deuteronomy 32:39, Isaiah 43:10, Isaiah 45:18, John 10:30). God Himself tells us that several times.
- Third, God has many functions, just look at His Names and Titles: God is Spirit, Christ, The Word, Light, (John 4:24) (1 John:15) (1 John 1:1)
God's Oneness
The bible is very clear that God is one! The scripture tells us: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).
“Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us? (Mal 2:10).
Let’s See What God Says:
- See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me (Deuteronomy 32:39).
- You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3).
- I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me (Isaiah 44:6).
The Lord our God is One:
- “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
- Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. (1 Corinthians 8).
- For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5).
God's Oneness in Christ
Jesus prayed to God just as we pray, as part of his human nature. Jesus experienced everything as a human being. The scriptures teach us that Jesus Christ is God incarnate (John 1:14).
Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature a God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature b of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross (Philippians 2:7-8).
Jesus is God in the flesh is revealed through faith by the Holy Spirit (John 14:11; 1 John 4:2; 2 John 1:7).
Oneness through Christ
- One Body = The Church (Romans 12:4-8, Ephesians 4:2-4, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17).
- One Spirit = The Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:4, 1 Corinthians 6:17).
- One Hope = Eternal Life(1 Thessalonians 4:14-17, Ephesians 4:4, Titus 1:2 ).
- One Lord = Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:4, Deuteronomy 4:35, James 2:19 ).
- One Faith = Same belief (Ephesians 4:4, Jude 3).
- One Baptism = Same baptism (Ephesians 4:4, Acts 2:38, 1 Peter 3:21).
- One Mediator = For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, (1 Tim 2:5).
Key Takeaways:
Understand, Overstand and Innerstand
The Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost, the Word, the Beginning, the End, the Light etc. are names titles of ONE God who works in so many different ways, but it is the same ONE God who does the work in all of us (1 Corinthians 12:6).
God has clearly mentioned that he is ONE. God is not made up of several distinct persons. God is spirit (John 4:24). It becomes false gospel when the Word becomes altered, adjusted, modified, or changed by anyone for any reason.
The Trinity is not in the bible and God Almighty is not a triune god made up of persons.
- “As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a curse!” (Galatians 1:9).
