Attributes of God – Part 7: God’s Holiness

G

od, our heavenly Father is holy; there is no god like Him (Isaiah 45:5). The attributes we have studied so far (Almighty, divine spirit, everywhere, all-knowing, and all-powerful) are a manifestation of God's Holiness - like no other. Let's dig in deeper to find out what the holiness of God really means, shall we?

What Does Holy Mean?

Holy means different, unique, distinct, or set apart. This means that whatever is called holy is the only one of its kind.

How is God Holy?

God tells us that He is holy. If God is spirit (John 4:24), that makes Him, the Holy Spirit, right?

  • I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, (Isaiah 45:5).
  • I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground (Leviticus 11:44).
  • Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? (Exodus 15:11)

God is sacred, unique, sinless, transcendent, there is no other like God Almighty. With this understanding, we have to fear God because the scripture tells us that:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding (Proverbs 9:10).

Holiness in Christ

If our Holy God was manifest in flesh (1 Timothy 3:16), that would inherently mean Jesus Christ is Holy as well right? Well let’s find out what the scriptures say about Christ’s Holiness.

  • But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, (Acts 3:14).
  • For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; (Hebrews 7:26).
  • He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Holiness A Requirement

In order to reunite with our Holy Father, we have to be holy ourselves. This is what God says:

“I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground” (Leviticus 11:44).

  • Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 19:2) (1 Peter 1:16).
  • Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
  • Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1).

Key Takeaways:

Understand, Overstand and Innerstand

Now we have a clear understanding about God’s holiness. We know He is different; He is unique like no other. God is holy and wants us to be holy (set apart, that is - separated from sinners, different, and saved through Jesus Christ).

Finally, in closing:

Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight
