Attributes of God – Part 11: God is Love
he nature of God is Love. God’s love is much more than a feeling of good emotions. Our human love is usually limited and nothing compared to God’s love. Welcome to the second last Part of our Series! We are almost there, we are excited to share this with you.
“This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words”(1 Corinthians 2:13). God's Love.
What is God’s Love?
God’s love is everlasting, unconditional, unrestricted and unmeasurable. God loves you so much and wants us redeemed with Him through Jesus Christ. This requires us, pay attention now: it requires us to be obedient, repent our sins, live our lives like Christ and be holy, Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16).
God’s is Love
God is the source of love, just the same as the attribute goodness. The book of John describes how God is Love, take a look at the first two verses:
- Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)
- This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4:9-11)
- “'The mountains may shift, and the hills may be shaken, but my faithful love won’t shift from you, and my covenant of peace won’t be shaken,’ says the Lord, the one who pities you.” (Isaiah 54:10)
- “But you, my Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy; you are very patient and full of faithful love.” (Psalm 86:15)
God’s Love through Christ
God’s unwavering and unconditional love is demonstrated through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus clearly showed compassion, mercy, patience and faithful love for all including the ones who rebel against God.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
- But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
- “I ask that you’ll have the power to grasp love’s width and length, height and depth, together with all believers. I ask that you’ll know the love of Christ that is beyond knowledge so that you will be filled entirely with the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:18-19).
The Greatest Commandment
Just pay attention to the first and second greatest commandment.
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with your entire mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:34-40).
Love your Enemies
Jesus taught us to love our enemies. This type of love does not discriminate. Jesus also explained why it important to have indiscriminate love, watch this:
- But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:44
Key Takeaways:
Understand, Overstand and Innerstand
In conclusion, God expresses his love through compassion, mercy, patience. Look at Jonah’s story for instance. God loves all of us and wants us to be with him in eternity. We know Gods unconditional love for us through Jesus Christ.
Finally, the book of John tells this about God:
- We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister (1 John 4:19-21).
