Attributes of God – Part 4: God’s Omniscience

I

n Parts 1, 2 and 3 we learnt that God is spirit, manifested into flesh, exists everywhere, transcends and is immanent. This time, we will learn something special about God’s knowledge - His Omniscience. As humans, our knowledge is finite, which means it is limited; otherwise we would have landed on the sun by now right? Join me, as we continue learning more about our powerful Might God.

What is Omniscience?

Omniscience is the state of knowing everything, unlimited knowledge or having infinite knowledge.  This is close to Wisdom, a topic we will discuss in Part 6 of this series. Wisdom involves making good judgement whereas having all knowledge involves the past, your thoughts, your heart and mind. God knows exactly what’s in your heart. God also knows your past, present and future, and that is ‘all knowing’. Take a look:

Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, You know it all. (Psalm 139:2-23).

God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything (1 John 3:20). Jesus said:

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him (Matthew 6:7-8).

God Knows the Past

The Almighty God knows our past, even before we are born!

  • Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58).
  • Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:16).
  • “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

God Knows the Present

Our heavenly Father knows what’s in our hearts and minds.

  • For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything (1 John 3:20).
  • But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).
  • And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen (Acts 1:24).
  • The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds” (Jeremiah 17:9-10).

God Knows the Future

The Lord knows our future thoroughly

  • For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).
  • You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live (Job 14:5).
  • “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether” (Psalm 139:4).

Omniscience of Jesus

Another way to view God’s omniscience is through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is all-knowing because He is God manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16).

  • He knows the past: Before Abraham Was, I Am” (John 8:48-59). Another scripture: In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.” (John 4:18)
  • He knows your heart and thoughts: But He knew their thoughts and said to them, “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against itself falls (Luke 11:17). Another scripture: Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him (Mark 8).
  • He knows the future: “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” (John 13:7). Another scripture, Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” (Matthew 26:34).

Omniscience Key Takeaways:

Understand, Overstand and Innerstand

Because God is all knowing, we can be rest assured by putting our trust in him completely through Jesus Christ.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3: 5-6).

Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight
