Attributes of God – Intro

A

n expert in the law, tested Jesus with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment (Matthew 22). To obey this command, we have to know God and not "know about" God in the first place.

As such, this is an exciting follow up series from our previous post: 40 Names and Titles of God. The Almighty God reveals who He is by his names, titles, characteristics or attributes.  God also reveals Himself through our Lord Jesus Christ. So, the best way to get to know God is through our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus prayed to God about this:

Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent (John 17:1-3).

First, as believers we get to know our heavenly Father, Almighty God better through our faith in Jesus Christ and the Spirit of truth - the Holy Spirit (John 14:15).

Second, John the Apostle said this about Jesus Christ:

  • The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

Third, he also went on to say that:

  • “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18).

Forth, Jesus made it clear that we can have a relationship with God only through Him:

  • “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).

Fifth, In the First Epistle to Timothy from Apostle Paul, it is written that:

  • For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5).

Finally, if you look at the bottom of every single page on this website you will see Jeremiah 9:24 that says:

Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight
