Things God Hates, Part 1 – Haughty Eyes, A Lying Tongue

W

e know that God loves us so much that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16). Because we are from God who is our Almighty loving Father, we also know there are things that He does not like, in truth, there are things He actually hates.

According to Proverbs 6:16 through 19, it reads; There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Welcome to another mini-series: Things God Hates, we will discuss at least two things that God hates in each part. Let’s get right to it and kick off with the first two.

Before we get to it, I pray that God blesses you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (Colossians 1:9). This teaching has been made possible as it is written:

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.

The best way we can get to know more about God is through our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the reason why our teaching is always centered on Christ. After all, if you think about it, the entire Bible is all about Him, glory to God! See, Jesus Christ encountered liars, thieves, murderers, hypocrites, and all sorts of evil people throughout his life. We can, therefore, easily make a connection to what God hates by examining those characters that Christ faced during His ministry.

God Hates Haughty Eyes

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Do you remember The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector that Jesus taught to illustrate this important principle? (Luke 18:9). The Pharisee was full of pride and looked down on the Tax Collector with so much pride.

Meaning and Example:

So what does it mean to have haughty eyes? It is someone that looks down on other people, someone that is disdainfully arrogant or proud. The scripture says:

  • “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:2).
What God Wants

 Jesus teaches us to:

  • 'Love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40).

You must show humility by caring for your neighbor. In other words, you have to be humble, and it’s easy to stay humble, how? Just remember where you came from.  God says:

  • I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless (Isaiah 13:11).

A Lying Tongue

Meaning and Example

Lying has become so common these days, just turn on your TV,  go on the internet or social media, church’s, false teachers, its everywhere.  A lying tongue means a compulsive liar, or anyone that lies as simple as that. Here’s the interesting part where most people don’t know about lying:

Jesus teaches us this about liars:

  • “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!”(John 8:44-5).
What God Wants

Jesus said:

  • I am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Jesus is the Truth, we just covered this topic in our recent teaching, click on the link.

We now know that the opposite of lies is truth right? Jesus said,

  • “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32). Always tell the truth regardless of the situation you are in.

God knows exactly what’s in your heart, and it does not matter if people around you believe you or not, listen:

  • Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight (Proverbs 12:22).

Key Takeaways:

Understand, Overstand and Innerstand

Finally, so here are things you should not do: do not be arrogant, do not boast, do not show any pride whatsoever, and do not look down on people. At least you now know where lies originate from, right? Listen to what God says:

  • To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. (Proverbs 8:13)
  • I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless (Isaiah 13:11).
  • Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 27:2).

I pray that this message has brought new light to you and has been a blessing as we continue to grow spiritually and learn more about our Father in Heaven. I pray you have God’s wisdom and that you may get to know the truth. Glory to God!

And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words (1 Corinthians 2:13).
