The Way, the Truth and the Life Series, Part 1 – Truth
elcome to our mini-series based on a passage in the bible where Jesus declared, âI am the way, the truth and the life; no man comes to the Father but by Meâ (John 14:6). In this mini-series, we will break down the verse in a clear simple way to better understand exactly what Jesus meant when He made this bold statement.
First, we will get to know what the Truth is. Arenât we all in a quest to search for the truth? We search for the truth all the time donât we whether we in court, in class, in science, during experiments and of course when we disagree.
Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor in charge of Jesusâ trial, including so many people today still do not know what the truth is, though Jesus had made it so clear during His ministry. Â Watch this:
- Jesus answered, âYou say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.â
- âWhat is truth?â retorted Pilate (John 18:37-38).
The good news is that Jesus made a promise to all of us:
"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32).
This truth will free you from deception, error and falsehood. So letâs dig a little bit deeper and get to know the truth.
The Word = God = Christ = Truth
We know the entirety of the Word of God is truth (Psalm 119:160). The book of John explains clearly breaks it down for us step by step, watch this
- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1).
- The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
- For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17).
Jesus Christ is in fact the embodiment of all truths, the book of John further explains:
- "And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life" (1 John 5:20).
Truth = Jesus is the Christ / Messiah
Jesus Christ himself tells us that he is the Messiah, watch this:
- The woman said, âI know that Messiahâ (called Christ) âis coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.â Then Jesus declared, âI, the one speaking to youâI am he.â John 4:25
- Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. âJohn 5:24
Jesus Christ also fulfilled so many true biblical prophecies including this:
- âThe stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lordâs doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.â âPsalm 118:22-23
Opposite of Truth = Lies
When a rich man asked Jesus what good thing he must do to get eternal life, Jesus replied,
- â âYou shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony (Matthew 19:18)
Here Jesus highlights the importance of truth by quoting the 9th commandment.
In addition, Jesus also shows us where lies originate from in the following passage where his enemies rejected his message:
- âYou are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of liesâ (John 8:44).
Many people will believe lies and reject the truth the same way they rejected Jesus Christ. Just take a look at false religions, false doctrine, and false teachers. The scripture tells us that
- âThey exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creatorâwho is forever praised. Amen (Romans 1:25).
The passage here is revealing the truth, many so called Christians are now worshiping spiritual fathers, money, material things - created things.
But you have power over lies by living in the truth. Jesus also taught us how to walk in truth because the scripture says âSubmit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from youâ (James 4:7).
Judgement and Truth
The Son of Man will judge according to the truth. See,
- âFor the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truthâ (Romans 1:18).
Jesus says:
- Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
- Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life (John 5:22-24).
Jesus here is talking about hearing and accepting the truth (teachings, message and instructions) of the gospel of Christ, Himself (Rom 10:17).
Key Takeaways:
Understand, Overstand and Innerstand
Pray that the truth dominates your life, in other words let Jesus Christ dominate your life because He is âthe way, the truth and the lifeâ (John 14:6).
Listen to King Davidâs prayer:
- Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name (Psalm 86:11)
The bible teaches us that: âTherefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another (Ephesians 4:25). Â We have to live and walk like Christ, avoiding lies and speaking the truth, bible truth. Stick to bible truth.
