Attributes of God – Part 6: God’s Wisdom
here is a lot of bible teaching on God’s gift of wisdom but we have not come across so much teaching on the actual wisdom of God Himself. This attribute is definitely unchartered territory for a lot of people to explore, but we are so excited to share it with you, glory to God!
“We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Corinthians 2:6-8).
How is God’s Wisdom Revealed?
It is through the Holy Spirit, watch this: “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words” (1 Corinthians 2:10-13).
What is God’s Wisdom like?
Let’s see what the scripture says about God’s wisdom
- But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere (James 3:17).
- Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (Romans 11:33).
- Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite (Psalm 147:5).
- Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding (Isaiah 40:28).
So the scripture teaches us that God’s wisdom is pure (without error), gentle, infinite so no one can comprehend the depth of His understanding.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:9)
Wisdom from God
We are encouraged by scripture not to depend on human wisdom but in God’s wisdom instead. We just have to pray to our Father who is ready to give it to us! Let’s take a look:
- For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; (Proverbs 2:6).
- For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men (1 Corinthians 1:25).
- For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy (Ecclesiastes 2:26).
Look at Apostle Paul’s goal:
- My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:2-3).
Christ is God’s Wisdom
Jesus Christ is God’s wisdom? Let’s find out what the scripture says:
“Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength” (1 Corinthians 1:20-2 5).
Key Takeaways:
Understand, Overstand and Innerstand
Now we know God’s own wisdom is something we cannot completely comprehend because His ways are much higher than ours. On the other hand, God gives us wisdom, the kind of wisdom the bible tells us to rely on.
Apostle Paul, mentions another special kind of wisdom given to us by God:
"It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:30).
