Attributes of God – Part 5: God’s Omnipotence

W

elcome back, just a quick recap, so far we learnt that God is spirit (Holy Spirit), Omnipresent (everywhere) and Omniscient (all-knowing). This time, join me to learn how God Almighty is Omnipotent. Watch this, ‘Almighty’ means He is All Powerful, something to reckon, respect and fear, yes, fear! (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 14:27, Proverbs 8:13, Proverbs 1:7, Psalm 34:9).

What is Omnipotence?

God’s omnipotence means He’s all powerful. The Almighty God has infinite power; His titles alone give us a clue about this kind of supernatural power. Let’s take a look at some Titles and Names of our Glorious Mighty God relating to His awesome power:

  • The Mighty God - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
  • God of gods / The Great God - For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.(Deuteronomy 10:17).
  • El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, 'I am El Shaddai; walk before me, and be blameless (Genesis 17:1).
  • El Elyon (The Most High God) “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” (Genesis 14:18–24).

God is capable of doing anything way beyond of our comprehension.

Almighty Power to Reckon

When we fear God's omnipotence, we are rest assured of his protection, salvation, and love for us. Take a moment to look at this:

  • He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure. Isaiah 33:6
  • He who fears the LORD is secure in confidence, and his children shall have a place of refuge. Proverbs 14:26
  • The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.

We fear God because there is no other like Him (Isaiah 46:9) with power to do all these things for us. With his power, we are alive and saved through Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 13:4).

This brings me to the popular question: If God is all powerful, why does he allow evil?

First, God gave us free will and wants us to be close to Him. Evil is the absence of good. Adam and Eve disobeyed God (Good, Luke 18:19) and became separated from Him. Second, In order to reconcile us with Him, this is what God did: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). That is why we should turn back to God through Jesus Christ.

Omnipotence through Jesus

Even though Jesus Christ, the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), died on cross, he rose after three days and is alive today because the scriptures teach us that

  • “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). Jesus’ spirit lived on whereas for Adam, his spirit died as soon as he ate the forbidden fruit.

During Passover, Jesus cleared the temple courts which upset many people, look carefully at his answer

  • The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” (John 2:19)

Jesus also mentioned that he has divine power, divine authority through God

  • No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” (John 10:18).

All things were made through Jesus Christ and that is amazing y’all. Apostle Paul tells us about the supremacy of our Lord Jesus Christ, take a look:

  • The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy (Colossians 1:15-18).

Key Takeaways:

Understand, Overstand and Innerstand

When we talk about God’s power, it’s not only about His wrath because He is Love. God’s omnipotence, is also shown in Jesus Christ who was living in Him (John 14:9-14). It’s the divine power to manifest in flesh (John 1:1), the divine power to resurrect (John 2:19), the divine power to create all things in heaven and earth (Colossians 1:15-18) and much more beyond our finite minds can fully understand.

Apostle Paul recognized this when he preached:

"I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power (1 Corinthians 2: 3-5). Glory to God Almighty!

Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight
