Attributes of God – Part 3: God’s Omnipresence

W

elcome to Part 3 my brothers and sisters. Our humble quest through this teaching is hope that you get to ‘know God’ and not just to ‘know about God’. You can get to know about God with theology or other systematic studies. Always keep in mind that clear understanding of The Doctrine of God requires something much more than theology alone. God Himself reveals this knowledge to us (Matthew 16:17).

God’s presence is everywhere.  Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account (Hebrews 4:13).

Omnipresence Meaning

Omnipresence is the presence of Almighty God everywhere at the same time.

Omnipresence Bible Example

Have you tried to run away from something or someone? You can sometimes right? But have you tried to run away from God? Well someone from the Old Testament tried it, let's take a look;

Story of Jonah
  • Jonah fled from the presence of the Lord (Jonah 1:3).
Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

Jonah's story shows us that God is everywhere; there is no escaping His presence.

King David:
  • Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. (Psalm 139:7-8)

God Himself Declares

"Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?" declares the LORD. "Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?" declares the LORD (Jeremiah 23:24).

God’s Immanence

When we talk about God’s immanence it refers to God working "in" and "through" His creation. This is about God intimately, intrinsically involved with His creation. God is not far from any one of us (Acts 17:27).

For instance, Jesus Christ is God incarnate, in that He was God in the flesh (John 1:1-14). Take a look at this:

  • Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory(1 Timothy 3:16).
Jesus Christ said
  • For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken (John 12:49).
God said:
  • “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him" (Deuteronomy 18:18).

God Transcends

This means that God towers over all of His creation.  He is both transcendent and immanent at the same time, something that is difficult to comprehend in our finite minds. Watch this:

  • Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom (Psalm 145:3).
  • And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
  • Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is lifted up; his majesty transcends earth and heaven. (Psalms 148:13).

Omnipresence Key Takeaways:

Understand, Overstand and Innerstand

The scriptures above attribute that God is everywhere and actually accentuate who He is. His omnipresence, immanence and transcendence is what makes Him Almighty God. God dwells with you at all times! This means God is with you even when you face hardships. Listen, I want to encourage you with this verse:

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). Finally, in closing:

Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight
