Armor of God, Part 5: Sword of the Spirit

A

postle Paul says: “Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). Welcome to Part 5, I am so excited to share with you this message. The Armor of God consists of the sword which is actually the only offensive weapon used against the enemy. Let’s get right to it without wasting time!

The Spirit is the Word?

Yes, the Spirit (Holy Spirit) is the Word (Sword) of God. Let’s see what the bible says about that.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).

  • So John 1:1 tells us that: The Word is God
  • And John 4:24 also tells us that “God is Spirit”
  • Furthermore we know that “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).

This means that: The Word = Spirit = God = Jesus Christ

The Sword / Word is a Gift?

According to John 1-14, If the Word manifested into flesh to become Jesus Christ then, yes, the Word is a gift. We know Christ is a gift according to Romans 6:23 and John 3:16.

In the Letter to the Corinthians, Paul talks about Spiritual Gifts saying:

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” (1 Corinthians 7-11).

The Power of the Sword / Word

Have you ever wondered why the Bible (The Word) is the most popular book in the world? God’s Word is all mighty and powerful, this scripture makes it clear:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the hear (Hebrews 4:12).

Offense with the Sword

The bible contains powerful messages throughout since it is inspired by God. The following verses can be used speak against the enemy, all trial and tribulations that we face:

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

“No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord” (Isaiah 54:17)

“But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you” (Luke 10:19).

“This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15).

Key Takeaways:

Understand, Overstand and Innerstand

What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments (1 Corinthians 2:12 -15)

In Jesus’ name, glory to God Almighty!
