A Type of Christ, Part 1: David
Series Intro
A Type of Christ
In this first series, I share with you how I was intrigued by a few interesting characters in the Old Testament that foreshadow or reflect or parallel or are a symbolic representation of Jesus in so many ways. The Apostle Paul actually compared Adam to Christ in Romans 5:14 as “a type of the one who was to come”. Most characters are from the Old Testament era and existed way before Jesus was born. What does this tell us? The entire Bible is centered around Jesus Christ! Isn’t that amazing? We will dig in a little deeper with scripture, analyzing the types of Christ in this series. We’ll kick off with one of my favorite childhood stories: David & Goliath. I hope you will learn new things. Let me know in the comments below.
David & Goliath Summary
he Philistines and Israelites were at war. Both armies had occupied two hills separated by a valley between them. The Philistine giant, Goliath, taunted and tormented the Israelites for 40 days, challenging them to a duel with an offer. According to Goliath’s terms, the victor and his army would rule over the opposing army. Meanwhile, young David is sent by his father Jesse to look out for his brothers at war. When David arrives, he hears Goliath’s tormenting offer. David immediately became interested in taking up the challenge and asked King Saul for permission. He convinced Saul by reassuring him that God would protect him. David gives an account of when God helped him kill both a bear and a lion while he was looking after his flock. Saul agreed, offered his own armor, and wished David well. David went down to the valley to meet Goliath for the challenge. Goliath and the Philistines laughed, seeing that it was a boy that came. David made a prayer and then used his slingshot to kill Goliath. David becomes the victor, saving his nation.
Let`s take a look at foreshadowing between David’s experience and Jesus :
David
1) A Shepherd
He is a shepherd, looking after his father’s sheep. Kills both a bear and lion to rescue a sheep, which makes him a good shepherd.
2) Obedience
David obeys his father, listens to instruction, he is sent by his father. David’s father is very old, think about how about Jesus' Father is.
3) Badly Treated
David’s brothers call him wicked. “I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle”.
4) Hope
David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart" Basically here he is showing that God is in control.
– gives hope.
5) Faith & Trust
David tells King Saul how much faith he has in God and is told to go ahead.
6) Armor
David does not use fancy man-made armor offered to him for protection.
7) Type of Armor
Instead, David spiritually wears The Whole Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10). Unlike Goliath, he now has the:
- Shield of faith,
- Helmet of salvation .
- The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
9) One Stone
David equips himself physically with five smooth stones. David eventually kills Goliath with just one stone.
10) Saves and Redeems
David saves his nation – so many people that were living in fear.
Jesus
01) The Good Shepherd
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Also psalm of David (Psalm 23:1)
02) Always Obedient to the Father
He is obedient, also sent by His Father in Heaven (John 12:49 “I don’t speak on my own authority.”).
God is the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 22:13) God has always existed, "from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” ( Psalms 90:1,2)
03) Treated Badly
Pharisees make false accusations (Matthew 10:25 ) and criticize Jesus (Mark 2:23-28).
04) Hope of Glory
Apostle Paul describes Jesus as “our hope” (1 Timothy 1:1).
And also, "...the hope of glory" which is the fulfillment of God's promise to restore us and all creation ( Colossians 1:27).
05) Trusts in God
Jesus goes ahead without fear to heal the sick even in situations no one dared. John 5:1–9.
06) Armor
Jesus believes in God, looks up to God alone for everything Matthew 4:10 Matt. 6:5-6,
07) Jesus`Armor
09) The Word
Jesus is the Word (John 1). Smooth is symbolic of pure, clean without error as Word of God. The Word can completely annihilate, or get rid of the enemy effectively, ever heard of spiritual warfare?
Matthew 8:28-34 - Jesus Sends Demons to Pigs.
10) Our Savior
Jesus saves and redeems His people.
So many times He healed and rescued people from their sickness, saved others from their sin and servitude.
To this day, the Word continues to save us from sin.
Romans 10:9-10 and Matthew 8:28-34
Key Takeaways
avid & Goliath`s story reveals so much how David is a type of Christ. David`s experience here overshadows Christ. Just look at the absolute trust and faith he has in God while others had lost hope. Jesus constantly reminds us how much faith we should have in God regardless of the difficult time we face. Follow-up by exploring more about faith (Matthew 17:20,) and (Mark 4:35-41). Let me know in the comments below what you think and if there are other parallels not mentioned above. Let`s continue growing, look out next week for Series 1, Part 2.
